Work Study Opportunities

There are about 25 work study positions at each Congolese Dance & Drum Workshop, for those of lesser financial resources who have plenty of energy to work in addition to taking classes.

Kitchen Work Study We need:

  • •    Food preparation people in the kitchen for breakfast (6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.), for lunch (10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) and for dinner (5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.) each of the 10 days. Food prep experience is important to qualify for these jobs.
  •  
  • •    A food order and pick-up person with a pickup truck to assist in ordering and delivering food and supplies to the camp.
  •  
  • More kitchen workstudy•    Kitchen cleanup people to wash dishes, utensils, pots and pans and kitchen gear for three meals each day. Usually each person on the crew works to clean up after two meals each day.
  •  
  • •    Qualified, capable people to work with and care for the children during all of the classes each day. The children have their own special area and facilities to do creative projects and play together, under the loving and watchful eyes of the Kindezi (child care) staff. The children range in age from 3 years to 15 years.
  •  
  • •    Three hosts at the front entrance to greet workshop participants as they arrive and depart each day. The hosts welcome people and keep a running logbook of ins and outs, communicate regularly with the main office, and supervise parking as needed.
  •  
  • Kindei work study•    People to clean the dance floor thoroughly before each dance class, and to clean and restock the bathrooms and shower rooms each day.
  •  
  • •    Five people for last-day clean up, throughout the entire facility at the conclusion of the workshop.
  •  
  • •    There are also staff positions teaching yoga twice a day and subcontractor positions doing massage and bodywork.

To qualify for a work study position, you must commit to being at the workshop for the entire 10 days, from the first Friday afternoon until all clean up is completed on the afternoon or evening of the last day. If you have to arrive later or leave earlier, you will not qualify for a work study job. If you cannot be there for cleanup on the last day, you will not qualify for a work study job. You must have people skills to be able to work together closely and cooperatively. You also must have skills, enthusiasm and discipline for the type of position you are applying for  (ie., previous experience in doing food prep, experience working with children, or very gracious and diplomatic skills with all people to be a host).

Alcohol or substance abuse during your work study shift, or arriving for your shift in a substance-altered state, is not permitted and constitutes grounds for immediate dismissal from the program.

A $100 deposit must be sent as soon as you’re accepted, and the remaining balance is due before January 15, 2012.
