You are cordially invited to join us for an amazing celebration of community and culture on the beautiful island of Maui! The Congolese Dance & Drum Workshop is a 10-day music and dance retreat that provides a rare opportunity for in depth study and exploration of traditional Congolese music, dance and culture. Since 1979, a unique cultural village has been forged where Congolese master artists and participants from around the world have joined together. This winter, the Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop will be held at the YMCA Camp Keanae in Maui from February 24 – March 5, 2017.
Matsinu (Dance) ~ Dance classes explore the rich movement traditions of Central Africa and are held twice daily for 2 hours per session, once in the morning and again in the late afternoon. The classes are open to all levels and are accompanied by live drumming and percussion. Each instructor has a unique style and interpretation of traditional Congolese dance. Dance barefoot or with dance shoes.
Ngoma (Drum) ~ Three levels of drum instruction (Beg/Int/Adv) are given twice each day. Instruction in small groups builds from basic drum sounds and rhythms to a full consistent vocabulary. The advanced level combines various rhythms into a composition, within a steady bell pattern. Bring your own drum.
Kisansi (Traditional Thumb Piano) The Kisansi is an instrument known by many names throughout Africa. Often associated with healers and griots, participants can explore the soothing melodies of this ancient instrument each afternoon.
Nzembo (Song) ~ Song classes are offered each afternoon. Learn traditional songs, call and response and original compositions that accompany ritual rhythms and movement.
Beach Day ~ On Wednesday, March 2nd, CDDW participants will leave campgrounds and carpool to a beautiful beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun and Congolese dancing, drumming and singing at the beach. This is one of the highlights of the camp experience, a not-to-be-missed event! Lunch is provided by the CDDW staff.
