Kisansi (Thumb Piano) and Nkunga (Song) Classes

Kisansi (Thumb Piano) and Nkunga (Song) Classes

Instruction in the kisansi, or African thumb piano, is offered once per day. Students learn to play ritual songs as well as original compositions. You don't need to bring your own unless you want to; kisansi are available for use in classes and for sale.

Congolese song and traditional call-and-response melodies are taught in a singing class for an hour each afternoon. Singing classes explore songs that accompany movement and rhythm taught in other Congolese Dance & Drum Workshop classes. Their original purpose was to transmit history, traditional values and social mores.

NEW: We have a CD available for learning Congolese songs. The CD is called Simplified Congolese Songs for Students, recorded by master Congolese storyteller and choreographer Chrysogone Diangouaya. This is a simple, a capella recording, not a performance CD, and includes a lyrics sheet with rhythm and cultural background information. The CD is US$20. To request ordering information or to ask a question, please email Robin@RobinAgarwal.com.
