Congolese Dance Classes

Congolese Dance Classes

Congolese traditional dance, much like its guide and companion the Ngoma drum, is rooted in sacred ritual. Birth, rites of passage, courtship, healing, harvest, celebration, war, and death, are all captured in this traditional dance form. Stemming from the cultural legacies of the Kongo Kingdom, Congolese dance has many variations in style that reflect numerous ethnic groups now residing in modern-day Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of Congo (Kinshasa), and Angola. Experience the unique style and interpretation of Congolese dance with our instructors. A two-hour class is offered in the morning and afternoon each day. Classes are mixed level and feature live drumming.

Dance classes explore the vast movement traditions of Congo-Brazzaville, Congo-Kinshasa and Angola, and feature a rich orchestra of live drumming, singing and other traditional instruments. Instruction is open to all levels and is offered twice daily. Each instructor has a unique style and interpretation of the region’s diverse movement traditions. Sample these stylings with bare feet or with dance shoes on a large wooden floor ideal for dancing.

The daily schedule of dance classes includes both a beginner and an advanced level dance class every morning, and an extended mixed level class every afternoon. Dance classes are held in an indoor gym on a huge wooden floor that is in excellent condition and is cleaned daily.
